We’re all great at making excuses. At finding reasons to justify

We can’t sleep at night. That pit in our stomach won’t go away.

In some cases, sure, it’s hard to know what it means to do the
right thing. But here is a pretty simple test we can apply most
of the time—try not to do anything that, as Marcus Aurelius said,
“requires walls or curtains.” If we’re inclined to hide it, we
probably shouldn’t do it. If we dread the publicity, maybe we’re
not living or doing right.
We should strive for the opposite. We want people to see what
we’re doing. We should be the kind of person who the more they
hear about us, the more they respect and admire us.

This idea of doing what’s right, of living in a way that makes us
proud of who we are, is prevalent in the lives and actions of
historical figures such as Marcus Aurelius, Florence Nightingale,
Jimmy Carter, Frederick Douglass, and Cato the Younger.
They give us examples of kindness, honesty, integrity, and
loyalty that we can emulate as pillars of upright living. We tell
their stories and explore the transformation power of living by a
moral code in Right Thing, Right Now: Good Values. Good
Character. Good Deeds (
